Transplant surgeries always carry risks, but this one carries risks many doctors have turned away from.

It's time for a transplant that most surgeons will never see in Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 3. Sometimes, that's for good reason!

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 3.

While it’s clear that Bailey is keeping something from Meredith but has told Nick, we get to see Ben excited about being Chief Resident but also being part of a ground-breaking surgery. It is cute seeing Webber and Ben connect over their Chief positions, though.

Meanwhile, the interns-turned-residents (we’ll call the residents from now on) are getting used to their new locker room, and Blue immediately takes a wrong step. There’s a new plastics fellow, and he immediately jumps to the conclusion that she’s an intern. To be fair, while Blue is arrogant in sending her to the intern locker room, there’s no doubt that this new doc didn’t do herself any favors. But Blue is the one who will suffer.

Cass is back in Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 3

Teddy and Jo discuss car leasing and negotiating as they go to the elevator, where Cass happens to be. She has no idea that Teddy and Owen have separated, and it’s clear that Teddy doesn’t want to share that part. With Cass in the hospital, even if it is just to get her husband’s wallet, Teddy doesn’t want to stick around, and so she decides to help Jo with the lease negotiations.

Now it’s time to find out about the surgery, which is why Nick is at the hospital. A child is getting a bi-lateral lung transplant from living donors, with both parents donating part of their lungs for their son. Of course, there are huge risks to this, and the parents can tell. The problem is that this little boy is losing time, and there isn’t a match on UNOS. The living donor transplant is the best option.

As for the interns, an emergency comes in. It turns out that Bailey’s patient was supposed to be coming in for chemo for stage 2 gastric cancer, but she’s been involved in an accident. This could disrupt everything.

Speaking of disrupting everything, Bryant learns from Lucas that Simone was his girlfriend. Okay, Lucas isn’t quite clear about everything, but it’s certainly helping Bryant understand Lucas’s animosity toward him.

Is the transplant case worth the risk?

Bailey takes the time help her patient, while Dr. Mohanty takes Blue on her rounds. Of course, there are beliefs from the patients that she’s an intern, which makes Blue’s mistake even more understandable.

Lucas and Bryant are forced to spend time together while Bailey’s patient, Katie, goes through the MRI scan. Bryant tries to apologize to Lucas. I will always say that I have nothing against an AP if they don’t know, but then also remember that not only did Bryant not know, but Lucas did break up with Simone.

Elsewhere, Nick needs Meredith to scrub in on the surgery, and this offers Meredith a chance to find out about Bailey. However, Nick is playing the “mom’s boyfriend” role well, and he’s not breaking Bailey’s trust. Love it!

If only that was the drama. Winston questions whether this is the right treatment, and as Winston runs through it all, Meredith also questions a few things. However, Nick is sure that this is the best surgery, even with the serious risks. Meredith steps in to stop the arguments, making it clear that only Ryan’s dads can make the final call, and Nick isn’t invited.

The transplant is a go

Blue naturally tries to get himself of Mohanty’s service, but neither Simone nor Jules is interested in switching. They’re focused on their service, which involves the transplant surgery. Yes, that transplant surgery is going ahead, with the two dads refusing to give up on the surgery.

With the transplant coming up, Winston is nervous, and that offers some time for Jules and Winston to connect. I love hearing the words of wisdom that Winston offers, and I love the partnership that I’m seeing between Jules and Winston. Yes, I’m starting to really ship the two of them. And so, the surgery begins.

Back with Bailey’s surgery, Bryant initially wants to bring up the fact that Lucas and Simone weren’t together, but they need to focus on Katie. It turns out that she needs her spleen removed, and Bailey remains focused and calm with the situation. There’s still hope for chemo.

While all that is going on, we see Teddy and Jo at the dealership for the car. It’s clear why she wanted to get Link to deal with it all, and maybe she should have just handled it herself. Taking Teddy did start as something good, but the discussion of kids’ memories and safety, it hits Teddy where it hurts.

The surgery is put on hold in Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 3

For Teddy, she realizes that she and Owen never took a family road trip or vacation. I do have to debate the time that the family left when Owen was at risk of arrest, but hey ho! Teddy is finally opening up to Jo about the divorce that they’re going through, and I feel like this is the start of a friendship for the two of them. Of all the people to talk to, Jo is the best, as she’s been through this and not through choice. There is something to look forward to, and Teddy is allowed the time to find her own happiness. Honestly, it’s some of the best advice Grey’s Anatomy has ever given.

While Ben starts to scrub in for the surgery, he and Webber wait for the go-ahead from Nick. However, Ben realizes just how much work comes with being Chief Resident. Oh, if only he had someone in his life who could tell him this…and if only he listened.

I don’t like Simone, but I do think that Lucas needs to get his head out of his butt. He’s putting Katie’s surgery at risk with his animosity, and Bailey can see it.

As for the other Bailey, Meredith continues to try to get information about her son, but Nick still won’t tell. The surgery could be put on hold, with the white cell count at a bad level, showing that he has an infection. With that, the surgery is off, and they just have to hope that Ryan has a few days to recover from this infection. My guess? He doesn’t.

Bailey may have some bad news after all

Jo tries to go back in to negotiate, but Teddy doesn’t give her that chance. She steps up to the negotiating table, and she proves just why she’s a good Chief when it comes to the financial side of things. This is how you negotiate for a car, but you need to know the type of person you’re dealing with.

Back with Blue, he continues to make mistakes. By allowing his patient to eat, he’s put him at risk now that he needs more surgery. Moharty isn’t impressed with his decision, and I don’t blame her.

It also looks like the surgery isn’t completely off for Ryan. Winston make sit clear that he can’t be put back on EC-MO, and that means they need to find a way to handle the surgery. Despite his doubt, Winston is the one to figure out a way to make the surgery possible, and so it really is back on.

Bailey’s surgery is underway, and tensions continue to run high. Lucas needs to learn how to just step back from his emotions for the sake of his patients, otherwise, I’m on Catherine’s side that she should have made him repeat his first year. Bailey can also tell that things aren’t right, and she sends Bryant out on an errand while taking over from Lucas.

With that, the montage for the transplant surgery starts, and we get a few looks between Jules and Winston to hint that something is on its way for these two. The question is whether the surgery was a success, and it certainly looks it at the end of the montage. This is Grey’s Anatomy, though, so what’s going to happen?

It’s not the transplant surgery. As Bailey is telling Lucas off, he points out that there are tumors on Katie’s liver. Now Bailey is worried.

Bailey is always right in Grey’s Anatomy

In the end, Teddy’s negotiation tactics worked. Now the question is whether Teddy is going home with her own car or with the salesman.

When one of Ryan’s dads wakes up, he learns that he wasn’t able to be a donor. However, Ryan is still safe. The surgery that Winston figured out was a success.

Back with Katie, Lucas decides to finally step up as a doctor. It’s just in time for Katie to wake up, but she needs the bad news about the liver situation. With the tumors, there’s some devastating news for Katie. With this news, it clear that it’s bad. The look on Bailey’s face tells Katie everything. Bailey is now worried, and it looks like it’s over. Lucas is the one to be able to step up to help with this. He knows that it’s not completely over, but we all know that it will be a fight.

Back with Blue, he decides to apologize, although it’s still not the greatest apology in the world. Moharty isn’t interested in listening, especially since she can no longer go on the date she was planning because of his mistake.

As we wrap up Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 3, Simone gets a hint that something is happening between Jules and Winston, while Bailey gets to see just how much work Ben has to get through. There’s certainly a bit of gloating in there, because, yes, she is always right.

Meredith finally points out the great thing about Bailey and Nick. She’s happy that her children trust him to tell him things, and sure enough, it is a great thing. Of course, we have to end with Teddy to find out it was a car, and she’s picking up Cass for a date. Who didn’t see that coming?
