Season 5 of Ghosts has so far seen the residents of Woodstone go toe-to-toe with a demon, a budding romance come to light, new social opportunities arise, and even a wedding. We’re only two episodes in so far. Episode three brings the unexpected to the B&B… a mummy’s curse. This is their Halloween spooktacular episode for the season.

The episode opens up in 1890 Egypt. A mummy is being shipped to Woodstone Manor as a local warns of the curse that will befall whoever is responsible for disturbing the mummy and all their descendants. Incidentally, 1890 is also the year Hetty died. This crate is going to either Hetty or her son.

Cut to present day, Jay is introducing Sam to the blue squash he’s started growing on the property for the restaurant's seasonal farm-to-table style menu. Bela, Jay’s sister and the receptionist for the B&B, also announces the first annual Woodstone Haunted House is on track for Halloween. The ghosts are slightly insulted that they opted for fake spooks when they have real spirits haunting the property. Sam and Jay decide to search the basement for items that can boost the haunted house’s creepy factor.

Nigel is eager to hold another seance. In season 2, episode 5, Halloween allowed a ghost that had previously moved on to return temporarily. The ghost Nigel wants to bring back is the deceased exotic dancer Chris from last season, who stole the hearts of both Isaac and Nigel at different times. The only problem with this plan is that Chris never ascended.

Well, technically, he ascended to the sky. Chris’ ghost power is the ability to ride his parachute around the world without being restricted to the property line until he lands. So he made the decision to fly off property and see the world. Clearly, Isaac intentionally misinformed Nigel.

Isaac, in an attempt to conceal his lie, informed Nigel that for a seance to work, the livings need an item that belonged to the deceased. Flower then points out that Sam saved the party favors Chris intended to hand out at the bachelorette party, where he passed. Nigel goes to make a plan with Samantha and Isaac heads off to ensure she doesn’t reveal his lie.

Enter the mummy who Hetty brought to Woodstone years ago

While perusing the basement, Sam and Jay find an abundance of spooky-looking Egyptian items. It’s revealed an actual mummy has been resting in the basement since 1890. Hetty thought it would be fashionable. Jay inspects the sarcophagus and finds instructions, which he translates via an app. Sam reads the incantation aloud, which is always a mistake, and the ghost of Amunhotep appears before everyone… well, everyone who can see spirits. Unfortunately, Jay is again oblivious to what’s going on.

The mummy ghost explains that he had a botched mummification and his spirit never moved on from his body. He spent centuries trapped in his body, completely aware of what was happening. This consciousness gave him a strong detestation of the Woodstones. This hatred is so strong, he promises biblical-level punishments for the dead and the living. Uncertain whether he has the power to perform such acts, everyone instantly hides Hetty’s identity. Instead of the lady of the house, a proper Woodstone woman, she takes on the persona of Marge, the Minnesotan who died at a costume party in 1995.

Jay deduces the scroll he found may have a reversal curse that can either re-imprison Amunhotep or move him on. Either way Sam and Hetty would be safe. Meanwhile, Isaac comes in explaining his predicament with the whole Chris lie.

While Isaac is trying to cover his mess and Jay is trying to read the scroll, Amunhotep sees Pete and Alberta squabbling. He tells them to not waste time on little things and enjoy being together. It’s revealed Amunhotep was entombed with his wife but when he was shipped to Woodstone Manor they were separated. During this touching revelation, resident basement ghost Nancy appears and accidentally reveals Hetty’s identity.

Amunhotep casts his curse on Sam and Hetty

Locusts are set on Jay’s squash while the mummy’s body is reanimated and set to go after Sam. On the run from the mummy, Nigel finds Sam and asks about the seance. Feeling like she has bigger issues to tend with, Sam explains that Chris willingly left the property and Isaac lied. Nigel is devastated. The sudden earth-shattering heartbreak for Nigel gave Pete the idea that if they reunite Amun with his wife, the curse will end.

Nigel confronts Isaac about his lie. In a stunning turn of events, Thor rather elegantly expresses that in his opinion Isaac was just protecting Nigel’s feelings. Nigel felt like he had a spark with Chris. However, Chris was ready to leave the property as soon as he realized he could. Nigel takes this to heart, but it’s immediately nullified when Isaac again lies, saying Chris was planning a return trip during Christmas. Isaac instantly rescinds that lie, but it is enough to make Nigel end the conversation.

Lie or not, could this be foreshadowing the Christmas episode?

Sam, Jay, and the gang find Amunhotep and beg for his forgiveness. Hetty understands what she did was wrong. Using the power of the internet, they found that Amunhotep's wife is in a museum in Egypt. They’ll gladly donate his remains to the museum so he can reunite with his beloved. Pete will act as chaperone until they make it to Egypt. He’ll then recite the incantation and both souls will be unbound to their remains.

This rights everything, and Amunhotep repeals his curse. Cut to a few days later, Pete confirms the spell worked, and they all helped reunite a couple who had been trapped and suffering for millennia.
