Blue Bloods was an incredibly popular show that ran for 14 seasons, airing its final episode in December 2024. Hoping to capitalize on fan dismay, Donnie Wahlberg took up a new project, Boston Blue, as a spin-off from the CBS original. Fans will only have to wait a couple of week before the premiere, and there are high hopes for its success.
Of course, that also gives Donnie Wahlberg, one of the lead actors in the new series, plenty of time to hype the show up for viewers. And he is certainly doing his part. It is clear that he wants to establish high expectations for the show, but in doing so, there is a lot of pressure to deliver. The more we hear about the upcoming premiere, though, the more it seems it will do just that.

Wahlberg opens up about premiere scenes
In Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg played the role of NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, a New York-born police officer. In the new Boston Blue spin-off, Wahlberg will again play the role of Danny Reagan, who this time will be at the center of the plot. Reagan traded in his NYPD uniform for a role in the Boston police department alongside Lena Silver (played by actress Sonequa Martin-Green), and the plot follows his adjustment to the new experience.
Wahlberg has shared that there will be "jaw-dropping" scenes in the premiere, as well as some sentimental moments that long-time fans of the franchise will really connect to.
“The best part about the clip is that the family and friends in the clip put a Red Sox jersey on Danny at the end of the scene…it was really sweet and really fun, and it did pain me. But I loved every second of filming the scene because I knew the end was going to be worth the torture that I had to go through,” Wahlberg told Collider.
While the new location will bring new characters, new storylines, and a new experience, long-time fans will not be completely disappointed. “Of course, [I’m] going to stay connected with the old characters, and they’ll be popping up from time to time.”
And of course, Wahlberg cannot go without making sure fans feel the same hype he feels about the premiere. “The first episode is going to blow people’s minds. I think people are going to be like, ‘Oh my god.’ There’s some twists and turns in the first episode, and then we’re going to continue that. We want to pay respect and honor Blue Bloods, but also… tell some of those [other police family] stories too, and… let Danny explore, you know, be a fish out of water.”
That is a lot to live up to, and hopefully the show can do just that. If nothing else, fans certainly have a lot to look forward to watching.
Obviously, actors and actresses are always going to promote projects they are on, especially if they are essential to the plot. Wahlberg is no different. But given how heartbroken fans were with Blue Bloods ending, there are high hopes for a great debut from Boston Blue. It sounds like the team is finding a perfect blend of new and nostalgia, with plenty of surprises to keep viewers engaged. If you are as intrigued as us, mark your calendars; Boston Blue premieres on October 17 on CBS.
