Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) has been through a series of hardships during this season of Chicago Med. The character recently lost his mother, with whom he had a complex relationship, but the silver lining was that her funeral brought back a Med character we hadn't seen since season 5.
We're talking, of course, about Charles' daughter Robin (Mekia Cox). Robin returned to the Windy City in the episode "Baby Mine..." to pay her respects and support her dad through this trying time. Those who've started watching Chicago Med in the last few seasons may be confused as to why this is such a big deal, but Robin has a pretty lengthy history with Gaffney Medical Center.
Robin Charles came back to Chicago

The character debuted in the season 2 episode "Brother's Keeper" as an epidemiologist. She did not have a particularly strong relationship with Charles at the time, so working in close proximity with him at Gaffney helped bring them together. Robin also struck up a romance with Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), but things quickly spiraled when the epidemiologist began showing symptoms of psychosis in her personal life.
Robin began having trouble sleeping, and complained about hearing rats in her apartment. She also became prone to outbursts of anger and frustration. In the episode "Ctrl Alt," a horrified Charles took it upon himself to have Robin committed against her will. She was eventually diagnosed and treated for schizophrenia. There are stretches in season 3 where Robin seemed to be on the mend, but they were constantly undone by setbacks and personal strife.
Robin decided to leave Chicago at the end of the season, and informed Charles she'd rather not tell him where she's going. She returned in season 4 to support her mother during lymphoma treatments and again in season 5 when her mother's condition worsened, and a farewell party was thrown in her honor.
Robin will suffer another family tragedy
Even when she returned, however, Robin failed to connect with Dr. Charles. The two never appear to see eye to eye on matters, as evidenced by the fact that Robin asked to accompany her parents on a trip that was intended to be her mother's last. Charles shot the idea down, stating that Robin's mother wanted to be remembered as healthy and happy.
Robin noted that she would be sticking around Chicago for a bit, which means she's in for even more trauma. The synopsis for the Chicago Med season 10 finale confirms that Dr. Charles' other daughter, Anna (Hannah Riley), gets hospitalized after serious a car accident. Robin will be on hand to deal with the emotional fallout of this incident, and hopefully get the chance to bond with her dad in the midst of all the Gaffney chaos.
We really hope Anna pulls through. The Charles family has been through enough loss for multiple lifetimes. We will find out for sure, though, when the finale airs Wednesday, May 21 on NBC.
