The Chicago Fire season 14 episode 10 promo made it clear that the heat was turning up to 100. It’s time to see whether something can come from Novak hooking up with Chicago Med’s Dr. Frost.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago Fire season 14 episode 10.
The story between Novak and Frost actually starts from Chicago Med season 14 episode 10, where Frost takes Novak out to make up for a situation at the hospital. Instead of waiting in line for donuts, they head back to Frost’s place, which is where Chicago Fire picks up.
While there’s heat for Novak, things are frosty for Severide and Kidd. There is a positive update about Shauna and Isaiah, but Kidd and Severide have their own things going on. Neither of them are dealing with Mouch’s current problem, and neither is Herrmann, who thinks that everything will work out. Since when is Herrmann the type that allows things to play out in their own time?

Vasquez is pulled back in on his dad's situation on Chicago Fire season 14 episode 10
Violet starts the shift by sharing a little about the firefighter program, but things are cut short when someone turns up to talk to Vasquez. It’s Ray’s parole officer, as Ray hasn’t turned up for his weekly check-in, and this could lead to Ray getting put behind bars. It’s a shame that this has to become Vasquez’s problem, but what’s the betting that Ray wanted this to be the case?
The first call of the night sees Truck 81 and Squad 3 head out to a situation where a car is on top of another one, and Squad 3 needs to figure a way out of the situation. No matter what is going on personally, Firehouse 51 always manages to work well on a call. When the woman in the car on the call mentions a baby, Kidd starts looking for a baby in the car. There isn’t one, though. The woman is pregnant, and it’s still clear that this is a much bigger problem than it initially was.

Dr. Frost makes an appearance at Firehouse 51
The call ends with some good news. Not only does Firehouse 51 get the woman out, but Violet hears a heartbeat and feels movement from the baby. Now it’s time to get her to Med.
At Firehouse 51, Herrmann is clearly in denial. He spends his time putting more shelving up in the officers’ quarters to make sure Mouch can put his wedding photos up. Cruz can see what’s going on, and he decides not to say anything about it just yet.
Things are also still tense between Severide and Kidd, and people are starting to notice it. Novak and Violet are clearly worried, but they can’t deal with too much. Instead, there’s bad news about the sim class, which leads to Dr. Frost coming in to do the class since the doctor who was supposed to is down with the flu.
Meanwhile, Vasquez gets a call from his dad, who says that he “has it handled.” However, some sort of kerfuffle on the other side of the phone and then Ray hanging up suddenly is sure to have Vasquez worried. This man is really finding a way to pull his son back into his own problems.

Kidd finds someone to open up to about Severide
While the sim class goes on, Severide gets a visit from Kerry, Van Meter’s daughter. It turns out that Severide hasn’t been going to the hospital as much since she’s there, and he doesn’t want to interrupt things. Kerry has noticed this, and she checks in on him. It’s a great chance for the two of them to catch up and get to know a little about Van Meter, but it’s also a hint at things that could happen between Severide and Kidd. Van Meter’s marriage didn’t work out because of how much he worked, and it’s clear that it was more due to lack of communication.
Severide agrees to check in at the hospital again, but it’s clear that it got him thinking of Kidd. He knows that his marriage could be on the rocks right now.
Vasquez isn’t able to get ahold of his dad again, so it’s surprising to see Ray just turn up at the firehouse. Something has happened, with Ray having a bust lip and a bruise on his cheek, but he doesn’t want to pull his son in on this. His father is deep into something, and rather than pulling his son into the situation, he’s actually trying to push Vasquez away. There are people not happy that Ray is out of prison, but that’s all he’ll say. Could they come after Vasqeuz?
As Violet gives Kidd a positive update about the baby, she also shares a little about Vasquez’s dad showing up. Kidd notices that something is potentially going on between Violet and Vasquez, but she pushes that off. It allows Kidd time to open up to Violet about what’s going on with Severide, including the fact that she doesn’t have much of a fight left in her with Isaiah moving, so she’s not fighting her way to get back into Severide’s thoughts. Severide needs to see that his wife needs him.
The next call of the night, Firehouse 51 is called to an incident that involves a boy trapped in a fence.

Stop being dumb for views
This is more than a kid trapped in a fence. It looks like the post on the fence is through his arm, and it’s right in the armpit, which explains the blood loss and him passing out. In some good news, Kidd’s team gets him out of the situation, and things look like he’s going to make it. Herrmann has one thing to say to the kid’s friends, “I hope the views were worth it.” This is why social media influencers need to just stop being dumb!
Back at the firehouse, Herrmann is still trying to set up the shelf, and he’s frustrated that Mouch is on Third Shift at 40 so can’t help. Cruz decides to still help out with options rather than point out that he’s in denial about the current Mouch situation.
Vasquez decides she should open up a little to Violet about the situation with his dad, but it’s clear that he is taking a lot on himself. He wants to get to the bottom of what’s going on with his dad, rather than going to the police about it. Things are certainly sparking up between them, but can Vasquez keep his head down and can Chicago Fire actually give Violet a good relationship?
He probably won’t get to Molly’s, though. When Vasquez goes over to his apartment, he walks in to find it ransacked. Someone has been looking for him or for something of his dad’s that he has.

Severide needs to talk to Kidd already!
Knowing that it has something to do with his dad, it looks like he calls him over. However, Ray isn’t all that open about the situation. It all goes back to Ray’s time inside, thinking about his former cellmate who wouldn’t stop talking about a homicide that turned into a murder. This was exactly how he got parole, as he was able to get a useful confession from his cellmate. Now, the cellmate, Nico, is taking revenge. They’re trying to get Ray to break his parole, so that he’ll end up back inside, and Vasquez is siding with his dad to take care of the situation.
Cindy gets to the firehouse, as she and Herrmann were supposed to check out some open houses. The situation with the shelf went from bad to worse, completely destroying the shelf that he was trying to put up! Still, nobody wants to talk about the fact that he is in denial about Mouch leaving?
Kidd goes to drop some flowers off for the new mom from earlier in the episode, but she starts to break as she sees the baby. Chicago Fire is finally getting to the loss that Kidd felt at the beginning of the season, and it’s about time! I’d hazard a guess that the fight Kidd is losing is because of depression, and she’s not being open about it with anyone. At the same time, Severide is so worried about Van Meter that he’s not looking out for her.
Speaking of Severide, he is at the hospital, checking in on Van Meter. While there, he checks in on Kidd’s messages with him, but he’s pulled away from that when Van Meter starts pulling at his tube, pulling it out before the doctor can get to him. It’s excellent news for all, as it looks like Van Meter has pulled through the damage from the fire.
While all this is going on, Vasquez and his dad head to a dispensary looking for Nico. A set up allows Ray to get into the back of the shop, where it’s clearly more than just a weed shop.

The Vasquez men go their separate ways
It turns out that Ray got to the brother of his former cellmate, who is looking out for revenge now that his brother is looking at life without parole. As there is a bit of a standoff, the cops move in. Someone sent in a tip that a parolee was associating with known criminals, which violated his parole. Is it possible that Vasquez turned his dad in? That’s what it seems like.
Finally, Herrmann starts to get real about the Engine situation. It’s clear that Herrmann needs a friend like Mouch, and Cruz makes it clear that he’s here to help. This will be an odd duo, but both Cruz hasn’t had his buddy since the loss of Otis, and it could work for now, until Mouch ends up back.
As for the Vasquez boys, it turns out that the parole violation was just a way into the dispensary call. Everything is good, and the two are able to go their separate ways. However, they’re still family, and Vasquez makes it clear that he may check in on his dad, for no reason at all. There is hope for the two of them to mend their relationship.
As Violet gets a text message about Van Meter, Kidd rushes to the hospital. However, Severide is heading to Molly’s, where he makes it clear that he wants to be with his family, which is Kidd. The two have a moment to really open up with each other, with Kidd sharing everything about how happy the new mom was with the baby. Honesty and communication are so important, and the two manage to reach it in this moment, but they need to keep trying. And they need to be “not okay” together. It’s a great way to end Chicago Fire.
Chicago Fire airs on Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
