The Chicago Fire season 13 finale synopsis is out, and it focuses on three main characters and what they’ll face in the episode. One of the characters is getting a moment we’ve waited 13 seasons for, and we’re ready to see what that means for season 14.

Yes, in some great news, Chicago Fire season 14 is happening. NBC renewed all three One Chicago shows, although it comes with the reminder that not all actors will be in all episodes. This is still a way to cut down on the budgets.

Someone we are expecting to see more of is Christopher Herrmann, and it’s his arc in the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, which will air on Wednesday, May 21, that we’re excited about. It looks like he’s made a decision about his career in the CFD, and it’s what we hoped for.

Herrmann will take the Chief exam in the Chicago Fire season 13 finale

While the first two parts of the synopsis focus on Severide and Kidd, the last line is a quick one about Herrmann. It’s all about the current storyline involving whether he will take the Chief exam or not, and it arguably is something we’ve waited 13 seasons to see.

The synopsis tells us that Herrmann will prepare for the Chief exam, which suggests that he has decided that he does want the position after all. He’s been back and forth on this idea ever since Boden made it clear that he wanted Herrmann to take over as Chief of Firehouse 51 in the Chicago Fire season 12 finale.

Showrunner Andrea Newman continually noted that Herrmann had to rise up the ranks for that. At the time of Boden’s statement, Herrmann was just a lieutenant, and he has worked up to Captain since then. Now Chief is a step up from that.

It offers us hope that it will mean Herrmann becomes the new Chief of Firehouse 51. That’s not guaranteed, though, as Pascal clearly likes the position he has. There have been moments where he seems to have felt a little threatened, despite knowing coming in that Herrmann was always Boden’s first pick for this position.

While Herrmann could take the Chief exam in the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, it doesn’t mean that he’ll pass. If he does, it also doesn’t mean that Firehouse 51 will just be handed to him. Pascal may put up a fight, giving us a big arc in season 14 for both Pascal and Herrmann.

With Herrmann’s promotion, though, there is the chance that we’ll see Mouch promoted to Lieutenant, as that’s become his dream. As the two veterans of the CFD, it’s fitting that we’re finally seeing Herrmann and Mouch move up the ladder.

Chicago Fire airs on Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
