As Chicago Fire heads into its fourteenth season, NBC’s hit firefighter drama is about to make history in a way that some fans might not have even realized.
Before we get into the historic moment coming next season, let’s note that spoilers are ahead from the Chicago Fire season 13 finale.
Chicago Fire season 13 saw Severide and Kidd finally deciding they wanted to start a family of their own after years of back and forth over whether the pair wanted to have kids. Their journey in the season saw the couple choosing to pursue adoption, and it looked like the pair were going to become parents towards the end of the season. Unfortunately, the adoption fell through when the baby’s grandfather showed up and convinced the birth mother not to give her baby up for adoption.
In the episode that followed, it seemed the show was setting up for Severide and Kidd to possibly adopt Natalie, the young girl Kidd had saved in a fire and had been helping this season; however, in the season finale, we learned that it was Julia’s boyfriend who was the one making it seem as though Natalie wasn’t welcome. Julia had no intention of abandoning her sister, and the sisters seemed to patch things up by the episode’s end. That led to the season finale’s biggest surprise.
As the episode came to an end, Kidd led Severide into the bedroom, where he discovered a positive pregnancy test waiting for him. That’s right, a Stellaride baby is on the way in Chicago Fire season 14, and with it comes a potentially historic moment for the franchise!

Chicago Fire could make history with Kidd’s pregnancy
While we have seen female firefighters get pregnant on some of the various firefighter dramas, we’ve actually never seen a female firefighter carry a baby to term and deliver their baby on the show. This means Chicago Fire could make history with the Stellaride baby in following Kidd’s pregnancy journey in season 14.
Now, before you say, ‘Wait, this isn’t the first time a female firefighter has gotten pregnant on a firefighter drama’, let me offer up further background as the history is in the details. We have indeed seen many pregnancy storylines introduced in firefighter dramas, but we’ve never actually gotten to witness a show write a pregnancy into the show and have the character carry the baby to term and give birth.
Gabby became the first firefighter to become pregnant on Chicago Fire way back in season 4; however, in a heartbreaking twist, Gabby lost the baby while on duty just a few episodes after we learned she was pregnant. Station 19 saw Maya Bishop get pregnant in its final season, but her pregnancy was depicted in flash-forward sequences, and the same goes for 911: Lone Star’s Marjan Marwani. While we technically did get to see the characters become pregnant, the moments came via flash-forward segments used to give fans glimpses into the future rather than the pregnancies being woven into the show as part of a season-long arc.
Barring an unexpected time jump or a heartbreaking twist, Kidd could become the first firefighter to have a full pregnancy storyline. How do you juggle the risk and physical challenges that come about during pregnancy? What impact does a pregnancy have on your career? What changes come after becoming a new mother who must juggle work and parenthood? These are all storylines that we’ve never gotten to see truly explored via a show such as Chicago Fire, and we’re hoping the show will get the chance to explore these questions and more through Kidd’s pregnancy on the show!
This opens the door for the show to tell an impactful story through Kidd, showcasing the challenges real women in the field must endure and creating meaningful conversations among viewers. We’re thrilled to see Chicago Fire finding new ways to make history this far into its run, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the writers have planned for Chicago Fire season 14!
