4 canceled broadcast shows that deserved way more seasons

Some shows end on a high note, while others don’t get the chance because they're axed long before they hit their stride, leaving behind cliffhangers, unanswered questions, and heartbroken fans still begging for one more season. Unfortunately, many of us know the feeling.

You discover a new show, get completely wrapped up in the characters, start dreaming up wild theories about what’s coming next, and then, just like that, it’s gone. No explanation. No proper goodbye. Just a cold cancellation notice and maybe a vague message from the cast thanking fans for their support. It’s frustrating, it’s unfair, and it happens way too often.

Sadly, it’s the harsh reality of the TV world, and there's not much fans can do except hold onto the hope that someday, somehow, their favorite shows might get the second chance they truly deserve. Until then, let’s take a look at four canceled broadcast shows that not only had us tuned in every week but also left us wanting so much more.

The Equalizer season 5
Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall and Tory Kittles as Marcus Dante in The Equalizer season 5 | CBS

The Equalizer (2021-2025)

Among all the canceled broadcast shows on this list, The Equalizer enjoyed the longest run, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t deserve more time to dive deeper into its characters and storylines. It could easily have carried on for a sixth or even seventh season at CBS. With other crime dramas like The Rookie and FBI still thriving, it’s clear there’s plenty of appetite for well-crafted procedurals, and The Equalizer fit perfectly into that space. That’s what makes its cancellation after just five seasons all the more frustrating. Fortunately, viewers were given a satisfying series conclusion because that's a rare gift in today's TV landscape.

Created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim, The Equalizer is a reimagining of the '80s series of the same name. It stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA agent who puts her expertise to use by helping people who have no one else to turn to. While she tries to maintain a low-profile life as a dedicated mother, she secretly takes on the role of a vigilante, fighting for justice on behalf of those who can’t fight for themselves.

Found season 2

Found (2023-2025)

After watching NBC cancel show after show lately, we were holding out hope that the TV network would spare Found, one of its newer series. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. On May 9, NBC announced the cancellation of the procedural drama after just two seasons, leaving fans stunned and disappointed. The cancellation came just a week before the show's season 2 finale, and unlike The Equalizer, Found didn't end with any sense of closure.

Fans were actually left with questions that may never get answered. Well, that's if the show can't find a new home. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Television plans to shop the show to other outlets, giving fans a glimmer of hope that Found could be revived elsewhere. We can only hope that another network or streaming service recognizes the show's potential and picks it up, allowing the story to continue and those lingering questions to finally be addressed.

Shanola Hampton leads the cast as Gabrielle "Gabi" Mosely, a former kidnapping survivor who now runs a crisis management team focused on locating missing individuals often ignored by the authorities. The surprising twist is that Gabi secretly imprisons her childhood kidnapper in her basement and makes him use his criminal skills to help solve missing persons cases.

Poppa's House
Damon Wayans as Poppa and Damon Wayans Jr. as Junior in Poppa's House | CBS

Poppa's House (2024-2025)

There are many comedy sitcoms out there, but that doesn't mean they all hit the right notes or keep viewers coming back for more. In my opinion, Poppa's House stood out by delivering consistent laughs while also weaving in genuine moments that made the characters and stories feel real. It's really unfortunate that it was canceled before it could fully develop its potential. Just one season wasn’t enough to truly showcase what the show could offer.

Damon Wayans Sr. plays the role of Poppa, a well-known New York City radio personality managing life as a contentedly divorced dad while juggling obstacles both at his job and with his family. Wayans Sr.'s real-life son, Damon Wayans Jr., portrays his on-screen son, Junior, a man chasing his dream of becoming a filmmaker while also trying to be a committed husband and father.

Rescue: HI-Surf
Arielle Kebbel as Emily "Em" Wright and Kekoa Kekumano as Laka Hanohano in Rescue: HI-Surf | Fox

Rescue: HI-Surf (2024-2025)

What really disappoints me about Rescue: HI-Surf being canceled after just one season is that it was a genuinely solid and engaging lifeguard drama series. And man, the visuals were just stunning. The ocean shots, intense action sequences, and Hawaii’s breathtaking scenery really brought the show to life. This is a series I'll definitely miss. It had the potential to grow into something truly special, and it’s a shame we won’t get to see where the stories and characters could have gone.

The short-lived series centers around a team of elite lifeguards on Hawaii’s North Shore who face dangerous rescue missions while navigating their personal challenges and relationships. The cast consists of actors such as Robbie Magasiva, Arielle Kebbel, Adam Demos, Kekoa Scott Kekumano, Zoe Cipres, Alex Aiono, and others.
