Big Brother has been a long-standing summer staple for American reality television show fans. It started off shaky, with Season 1 receiving poor reviews. After changing the format from the U.K. style of audience voting to the Survivor style of players eliminating each other, the show took off and has been a titan in the CBS lineup ever since.
27 seasons later (not including spin-offs such as Over the Top, Celebrity, and Reindeer Games), the show is still going strong. The slogan for the show has always been to expect the unexpected. While sometimes the show twists fall flat, others have caused immense drama, mayhem, and riveting television.
This year, producers are hyping the season up as the most unexpected ever. We have heard this before, so can we actually expect a season of unbelievable twists?
Yes, expect the unexpected is the slogan, but this time, Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan said it almost literally. Recently, Julie Chen and CBS released a teaser for the upcoming season in the form of the key art. The keys displayed are clearly master keys, the old school style ones that you expect to see in old mansions or the like.
“The key to a perfect summer is no mystery," the EPs told EW. “Get ready to unlock the most unexpected season of Big Brother yet!” Yes, they did just essentially tell us that we should be expecting the unexpected, as Dalton Ross pointed out.
There were a total of 48 keys, but that number may or may not be meaningful. Julie Chen Moonves, the host extraordinaire, is not revealing much to us, either.
"The keys to unlocking unexpected mysteries in the Big Brother house are right in front of you! Don’t be left in the dark this summer. Be sure to tune in!" Moonves teased.
Well, that is not very helpful.
In other words, we really do not know much. Keys are clearly a major influence, but what, how, and why, we do not know. That said, it seems there will be some major twists in store, and hopefully they do not impact the game too much in a negative way, but rather add to the chaos and excitement that really pushes players to their limit, but is fair for everyone. Time will tell.
Big Brother has never shied away from making controversial twist decisions and pushing the envelope on what can and cannot be done in the game. It would be nice to have a bit more insight on the keys, but we are only a couple of weeks away from the season premiere, so we will find out soon enough!
