Last week on American Idol, the Top 7 took to the stage to perform songs from Taylor Swift and iconic California artists in a night that welcomed Nikki Glaser as guest judge. By the end of the night, two more hopefuls' journeys came to an end with the eliminations of Daniel Stallworth and Brooks Rosser.
This week, the stakes could not be higher, as just a few performances stand between the Top 5 and the American Idol finale. Tonight, we rewind the clock to 2006 for a celebration of the American Idol class of 2006, featuring the returns of original American Idol judge Randy Jackson mentoring the contestants and fellow original judge Paula Abdul joining the judges' panel. The night also brings some Dancing with the Stars action with a little ballroom flair thrown into the celebration with Lindsay Arnold, Whitney Carson, Gleb Savchenko, and Jan Ravnik accompanying the contestants for their opening numbers of the night!
The American Idol race has never been tighter, and there is no telling who might make it through to the final. The Top 5 will give it their all in hopes of winning over the viewers at home and punch their card to the finale where the Top 3 will compete for the title of American Idol.
Read on for our complete recap of American Idol 2026's Top 5 performance and results show!
Keyla Richardson performs “River Deep, Mountain High” by Tina Turner and Ike Turner
Opening the night was Keyla Richardson, whose performance Lionel called the perfect way to start a show! Paula praised Keyla for her performance, noting that her vocal range is like a weapon; it feels like every moment is inevitable. That said, she did one piece of constructive critisim as she encouraged Keyla to remember that her whsiper has to be equallt as dangerous as her top note.
Carrie agreed with Lionel that the performance was a perfect way to kick off the show on a high note and loved how Keyla interacted with the dancers on stage.
Chris Tungseth performs “Northern Attitude” by Northern Attitude
Paula loved the beautiful tender ache in Chris' voice, which she described as him almost like letting us in on a secret. The only thing she wanted was for him to stay in the achiness of the song for longer. Carrie called it a really good vocal choice, noting that when he finds the right song, it fills the room and hits in all the right places, as this performance did.
Luke reflected on how amazing it has been getting to see him grow more comfortable in hitting those bigger notes as Lionel revisited Paula's remarks by encouraging Chris to hold onto his ugly face as long as he can. Lionel also pointed out that it was noticeable how Chris got distracted when the dancers took to the stage.
Braden Rumfelt performs “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims
Carrie agreed with the notes that Randy gave him in rehearsal about getting more comfortable on the stage. As she noted, it's not about dancing but about singing with your whole body which he's on his way to and just needs to keep working on. Luke agreed and added that he loved the performance.
Lionel too felt that Braden was thinking too much in his performance and encouraged him to relax and be in the moment more. This was a sentiment Paula shared. While Paula noted that she loves Braden's voice, she wanted to see him own the stage more, telling him his voice can sell arenas but he can't lose himself.
Hannah Harper performs “Fever” by Peggy Lee
Luke loved the performance, calling it incredible and so uniquely different. He loved how it was sexy and sultry and not at all what they've come to expect from Hannah. Lionel, like Luke, loved how Hannah managed to surprise them with her performance choices.
Paula reminded her that there is nobody in the competition with her unique sound and commented on how it's been so beautiful to watch America become so invested in her journey. Carrie closed out the judges' comments, sharing her proudness with Hannah for how far she's come and encouraging her to keep bringing it.
Jordan McCullough performs “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis
Lionel was left nearly speechless by Jordan's performance. Paula, having clealry been told to cut back on her feedback for time, noted that she had so much to say and would tell him more backstage later, but was in awe of his voice and the gift he's been giving, which she described as being otherworldy.
Carrie called Jordan a perfect example of not overdoing it while still having such a natural stage presence, commending him for how he sings with his whole body and makes them feel it. Luke admitted that Jordan has made him such a believer, noting that he sees so much in front of him and such a bright future beyond Idol calling him one of the best singers the show has ever had.
Keyla Richardson performs “Living For the City” with Taylor Kicks
As the night continued, we moved along to the Class of 2006 part of the night, in which the Top 5 each took to the stage to perform alongside a member of the American Idol season 5 Top 12. Keyla opened this with a performance with season 5 winner Taylor Hicks.
Paula admitted that she's never seen Keyla have so much fun on the stage, calling it a brilliant performance. Carrie agreed that it was so much fun to watch, and the unexpected pairing worked so nicely, as they sounded incredible and had a great time. Luke loved how their energy married in the performance, while Lionel noted "That was stupid," but we promise it was in a good way.
Chris Tungseth performs “The Thunder Rolls” with Bucky Covington
Carrie loved the performance, calling it the most comfortable Chris has looked on stage all season, while Luke called it his best vocals yet. Lionel was equally impressed, noting that his attitude was on point as Paula praised him on a great job.
Braden Rumfelt performs “The Show Must Go” with Paris Bennett
Luke loved the way Braden showed up in the performance, with Lionel noting he killed it. Paula loved how different it felt from his first performance and how she got to see a different Braden with the performance. Carrie admitted that she wished this night could have come earlier in the season, as the duets have really pushed each of the hopefuls, calling the performance amazing.
Hannah Harper performs “A Broken Wing” with Kellie Pickler
Lionel called the performance a perfect voice blend and a dynamic performance. Paula was wowed by their beautiful melody choices; Carrie called it a magical performance, while Luke enjoyed how the pair fed off one another's energy to give an amazing performance.
Jordan McCullough performs “A Song For You” with Elliott Yamin
Through tear-filled eyes, Paula called Jordan and Elliott's performance a masterclass and a Grammy-debut-level performance. Carrie admitted that she does not have enough words in her vocabulary to give them the praise they deserve as she encouraged America to vote.
Luke compared the performance to a Lamborghini and Ferrari sharing the stage, calling it an amazing performance to watch and witness. Lionel loved how their voices complimented one another and noted that they turned this into the Church of American Idol.
