There's been rumors and speculation that perhaps newcomer and American Idol judge Carrie Underwood may not be returning for the upcoming season 24 on ABC. This means if she decides to exit, she would have only served on the singing competition's panel for one season.

There have been different reports hinting that she may not be back due to salary issues, with the former season 4 winner reportedly earning less than former judge Katy Perry. It's unknown how much she's making compared to fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie though. Some of us were also thinking that she personally doesn't want to come back after the other judges seemed more excited about it, while her answer was more vague when asked. Part of it could also have to do with balancing work and family life.

The reception to Underwood by American Idol fans has been mixed, many of them not liking her judging style. Plus, it seemed like she wasn't really rooting for winner Jamal Roberts. Well, whatever the reason, if it does happen as nothing has been confirmed yet, we're already thinking of some other alums who could take her place. Especially since it doesn't seem like Katy Perry is interested in making a return either.

Kelly Clarkson

First up for me would be Kelly Clarkson! She is so iconic, known to be the first American Idol winner ever after competing on the first season. That immediately gives her a great selling point and connection to the show. Out of everyone, she would make the most sense. The question however is whether the artist would want to, and if she'd have time in her busy schedule running her daytime talks show The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Next would be either Jennifer Hudson, who came in seventh place in season 3, or Fantasia Barrino, who was the one who actually ended up winning that season. Both of these lovely ladies are absolute powerhouses. Hudson has gone on to have a very successful career after her time on the singing competition series, even though she wasn't even a runner-up. She's gained a lot of knowledge and expertise in the industry, just like Clarkson and Barrino too.

One of my personal favorite contestants from all 24 seasons is Jordin Sparks from Idol season 6. She proved her talent straight away, and I think she'd make for a great judge. I was rooting for her from the start, so how full circle would it be for her to come back as a judge?

Finally, our last pick would be season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert. He was always one of my favorites, and I love how successful he is now! He has joined legendary rock band, Queen, as their front singer when touring. How amazing is that!? I know bringing Lambert on baord would mean three male judges. But I don't know. I'm such a fan of his, I wouldn't mind. Though I feel like ABC wouldn't necessarily agree with me.

American Idol season 24 premieres in 2026 on ABC.
