One way to make fan bases happy is by bringing two beloved shows together. It's always exciting when your favorite series collide in a crossover event, whether it's a shared universe, surprise cameos, or a storyline that bridges both worlds. It not only delivers fan service in the best way possible but also reinvigorates both shows, creates new narrative possibilities, and strengthens the emotional connection fans have with the characters and stories they love.
That’s why the enthusiasm from a 911 star pushing for a crossover with The Rookie has sparked so much excitement. Fans are thrilled at the prospect of these two popular ABC shows joining forces, promising the high-stakes drama and thrilling moments that both series are known for. In a recent interview with TVLine, 911's Ryan Guzman (Eddie Diaz) shared his thoughts on Bobby’s death, hinted at a major life decision that could be on the horizon for his character, and expressed his eagerness to see 911 and The Rookie team up for a crossover event.
When asked about the possibility of a crossover with the upcoming 911 spinoff, 911: Nashville, Guzman revealed that the team is actually more eager for a crossover with The Rookie. Speaking to TVLine, the actor said he’d “love” to see the two shows come together. But when the interviewer mentioned that The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley had previously explained why a crossover likely won’t happen, Guzman responded with playful disbelief, exclaiming, “Why can’t it happen!” He jokingly pointed out that “we live in fantasy land,” implying that since both shows exist in fictional universes, there’s no real reason creative teams couldn’t find a way to make it work. I'm sure fans think the same way, but the decision is ultimately up to the networks and the people behind the series.
Back in January 2025, Hawley pretty much shut down a 911 and The Rookie crossover, making it clear that there were no current plans to merge the two shows for a joint storyline. He emphasized the creative challenges and fan expectations involved, as well as the logistical issues of having two shows set in the same city without characters crossing paths already. However, since he didn't outright say a crossover was impossible, we're holding onto hope that someday the stars might align, and the creative teams could find a way to bring these two worlds together in a way that feels natural and exciting for fans.
Don't worry. You can count on us at GeekSided to come back and let you know if this ever happens. But for now, we’ll just have to keep dreaming about that epic crossover event and enjoy both shows on their own. 911 is expected to return with its ninth season in fall 2025, while The Rookie season 8 will air midseason 2026.
