OpenAI just introduced plenty of new features to ChatGPT and more as part of its 12 days of AI event, including Sora, the video creation tool, and the re-launch of the Canvas tool that makes writing longer documents a lot easier when using ChatGPT. One of our favorite features here at GeekSided is the addition of Projects. Keep reading to learn more about it.
What is the Projects feature in ChatGPT?
The Projects feature acts as a folder system within ChatGPT, enabling users to consolidate all relevant materials for a specific task or topic in one place. It makes it a lot easier to access ongoing work and review work that you already did.
How to use the Projects feature
- In the ChatGPT interface, locate the “Projects” tab on the left-hand menu.
- Click on “New Project” or the plus sign if you already have a project. Then, assign it a descriptive name that reflects its purpose, so it’s easier to find when you need it.
- At the top of the next page, you can select a color for your folder to make it easier to find at a glance when you are working on multiple projects. You can edit the project name below if you need to.
- Next, you can upload up to 20 files that will help the AI understand your project. For instance, if you are going to be comparing baseball players, you can upload a document with all of the player’s stats that the AI can reference when answering questions.
- List any instructions you have for the AI, from where to look for the answers to how long they should be, to help you get the perfect response every time.
- As you create new conversations in the chat box, they will appear below the options to add files and instructions. To remove conversations from this list, click the three dots next to the title.

Benefits of using the Projects feature
By grouping related materials, Projects reduce clutter and make it easier to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Having all relevant information in one place streamlines the process of working on complex tasks, saving time and reducing the likelihood of overlooking important details.
Projects allow for tailored setups, accommodating various workflows and preferences, which can enhance productivity.
Availability
The Projects feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users as of December 13, 2024. OpenAI will bring it to Enterprise and Education accounts in January 2025 and free-tier users sometime in the future.
