Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X, codenamed “Brooklin,” should be released any day now, even though Microsoft has yet to announce an official release date. Most insiders expect it to arrive in late October. Let’s look at what to expect when it finally does arrive.

New design and all-digital format

The Xbox Brooklin will have a new cylindrical design, which is a dramatic departure from the boxy shape of the original series. It will also have no disk drive, making it a digital-only console like the Xbox Series S. This move reflects Microsoft’s push toward digital downloads and cloud gaming, which is better for the environment. However, it is likely to anger gamers who like to have a hard copy of their purchases.

Upgraded storage and connectivity

One of the nicer features of the Blooklin is its upgraded memory to two terabytes, which is double the standard system. Additionally, Brooklin will feature improved connectivity, including support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. These upgrades will provide faster download speeds, better wireless performance, and broader compatibility with Bluetooth accessories.

Controller upgrades with new features

Microsoft is also introducing a new Xbox controller, “Sebile,” which will have upgrades that include haptic feedback, an accelerometer for “lift to wake” functionality, and direct-to-cloud gaming capabilities. It also includes Xbox Wireless 2 and Bluetooth 5.2 for improved connectivity.

Power efficiency and sustainability

Despite not offering significant performance improvements, Brooklin will be more power-efficient. With a 15% reduction in power requirements and a quieter fan due to the smaller die size, the console will run cooler and quieter than the original Series X. Microsoft has also introduced an updated low-power standby mode that consumes 80% less energy than current Xbox Series S consoles.

Same price, new possibilities

Despite the upgrade, the Brooklin will cost the same as the current Series X at $499, making it a good choice for new buyers. However, the decision to upgrade will likely come down to how much you rely on physical media and how much you need the additional storage space.
