As developers incorporate Artificial intelligence (AI) into more and more things, there is a growing concern about how social media companies, like Meta (Facebook. Instagram), are using our content to train AI. While Meta claims to offer ways for users to manage their data privacy, opting out of having your data used for AI training isn’t as simple as clicking a single button or reposting some text on your timeline. If you want to keep your content away from AI keep reading to learn how to do it the right way.

What is Meta AI training?

Meta AI training involves the use of vast amounts of data, including your interactions on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Developers use this data to train algorithms that enhance Meta’s services, from content recommendation to advertising.

Meta’s official data policies

Meta’s data privacy controls primarily focus on how it shares your data with other users and advertisers but not on how it uses it for AI training, and opting out isn’t as clear-cut. While many people believe that opting out via some text on your timeline will do the trick, it won’t.

The hidden process

Although Meta doesn’t explicitly offer a “Stop Using My Data for AI Training” button, there are ways to limit how much data it uses.

Adjust your privacy settings.

  • Navigate to your Meta account settings on Facebook or Instagram.
  • Go to the “Privacy” section and review the data collection settings.
  • Reducing data collection can, in general, limit the amount of personal information that Meta’s AI systems receive.

More steps

Meta’s AI uses your behavior to serve personalized ads. By turning off personalized ads in the “Ad Preferences” settings, you reduce the training input based on your activity.

In the settings, turn off app and website tracking, which Meta uses to gather data even outside its platforms.

Delete past interaction data, such as posts, messages, and activity. The less historical data Meta has, the less it can use to train its AI systems.

You have the right to request Meta to delete your data entirely. It’s an extreme step, but it prevents any future use of your information for AI training.

What does opting out really mean?

While these steps will limit how Meta can use your data, it’s important to note that Meta’s AI systems likely have already trained on much of the information you’ve shared in the past. Opting out now will only help protect future interactions. As for the data Meta already has, they don’t provide a clear timeline on how long they will use it for AI training.

By following the steps above, you can limit the amount of data the company can use.
