After years of speculation and rumors, Nintendo has finally announced the new Nintendo Switch 2 and scheduled it for release later this year, although they didn’t give an exact date. What they did mention were several exciting new features and upgrades. While they didn’t provide as many details as many would have liked, the early teases have fans buzzing, especially after seeing some actual gameplay. Let’s take a look at what we can expect.
New design
The Nintendo Switch 2 handheld console will have a larger screen than its predecessor, with smaller bezels that will help improve the visual experience and improve immersion on the go. The newly upgraded kickstand not only looks attractive but will also help stabilize the screen during tabletop sessions.
Another highly anticipated feature of the Nintendo Switch 2 is the redesigned Joy-Cons that use Hall Sensor thumbsticks, which should help eliminate stick drift, which was a problem for the original Switch. The thumbsticks will also be a little larger, which should help make them more comfortable to use. The console now includes a second USB-C port, potentially for enhanced peripheral connectivity and charging options.
Technical specs
Specific hardware details remain under wraps. However, reports suggest that the Switch 2 will utilize Nvidia’s custom Tegra T239 processor, which should put it closer in performance to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and Is also likely to support features like DLSS and ray tracing, which can provide a significant upgrade to the graphics over the previous system which has been taking some heat for being underpowered for today’s gamers.
Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible with most games from the original Switch, both in physical and digital formats. However, some titles may not be fully supported, but there is no word yet on which titles won’t be backward compatible or why.
Nintendo doesn’t expect you to play old games, though, especially with the new Mario Kark game teased during the official announcement, which showcased the familiar characters in a fresh racing experience. Other games that players expect include Synth Beasts, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokemon Legends: Z – A.
