ChatGPT App: A comprehensive review of features and future updates
By Ed Malaker
OpenAI has rolled out its official ChatGPT app for Windows desktop and mobile users. It’s still the early version, with not all features working and new features coming later this year, but you can download it from the Windows app store. It is similar to the CHatGPT app for macOS, which came out in June.
The New ChatGPT App: What Can It Do?
When the full version of the app comes out, it should offer seamless integration across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS platforms. Ask ChatGPT questions, troubleshoot issues, and have the app speak back to you using realistic, human-like voices developed in collaboration with professional voice actors. However, this feature is still in development.
Currently, the app provides quick answers with a [alt+space] shortcut that opens a chat window. Additionally, the app now supports image input, allowing users to upload photos for more in-depth discussions about visual content, whether it’s analyzing a document or troubleshooting a broken appliance.
Its multimodal capabilities are a particularly useful feature. You can upload a document and have it converted to a spreadsheet and vice versa right from your desktop. These features are helpful to casual users and professionals in fields like design, research, and education who can utilize AI for detailed, image-based problem-solving.
Is It Worth Downloading the ChatGPT App?
For those who frequently use AI for productivity tasks, the app is certainly worth downloading. The app surpasses the web-based version, offering more convenience and interaction options along with new features, like the ability to draw on an image to focus on a certain part, DALL-E 3 image generation and new features being rolled out, like advanced voice interaction.
However, there are a few limitations to note. For instance, some anticipated features like OneDrive and Google Drive integration are still missing from the app. Additionally, while voice and image functionalities are robust, these features are being gradually rolled out to users, meaning some might not have immediate access. It’s also not available to free users just yet.
